Prepare for Zaniness – Camp Registration is Going Wild!

We LOVE that kids want to come back to camp year-after-year! And we love having new campers, too. You can’t imagine how excited we get as the registrations roll in. Day camp is filling nicely – and quickly – so please register online or by mail soon!

Many of our after-camps and specialty camps are nearing capacity! The following are more than two-thirds full, so if your child wants to attend, please let us know: Pottery (weeks 1, 2), Cool Kids (weeks 2, 4 and 8), Tennis (week 3), Horseback (week 4, 6) Climbing Wall (week 8), Jesse Brown Basketball (week 9) and Eco Aqua (week 9.)

Just added! Creative Writing for the Young and Older … Indulge your inner author! Taught by former Salisbury School English teacher Suzi McKeen of “The Writer’s Advantage,” Section One is for kids grades 7-9 (July 7-18) and Section Two is for grades 10 through adult. Middle schoolers learn the basics of fiction writing and brainstorming, then they write and bind their own, illustrated short story book. Teens and adults can start from scratch or bring in something they want to polish. Leave with a solid, well constructed short story. Both Sections are $499.

Questions? Call Donna Haag, Camp Registrar, today. She can answer almost anything about camp, or find someone who can. 410-742-4464.

Take a Vacation from Packing Lunch!

Donna says: Your kids are on summer vacation – but how about you? Let Camp Odyssey feed your day campers all summer long. We have a week’s worth of variety at a reasonable cost – and all proceeds go to the Camp Odyssey Scholarship Fund.

CAMP SPOTLIGHT: THE SCIENCE OF ODYSSEY ACADEMY

Odyssey Academy finds the fun in science through innovative programs for middle and high school students. This past month, we talked to Odyssey Academy director Erin McAfee about Forensics CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Techniques.

CAMP ODYSSEY: What will campers have in store for them if they sign up for the CSI Camp?

ERIN MCAFEE: On the first day of camp the students are presented with a very realistic staged crime scene. In this staged scenario, a person will be found dead, possibly murdered, on the school grounds and it will be up to the students to find out ‘who done it.” As a group we begin looking at the different types of evidence involved in the crime and by the end of the week, they use their findings to identify the killer.

The students will learn all the basics of crime scene investigation and have the opportunity to work hands on with simulated evidence. Some of the types of analysis the kids participate in is blood typing, chromatography (ink separation and identification), mystery powdered substances, handwriting analysis, urinalysis for drug testing, footprint and tire track casting, fingerprint analysis and interviewing suspects.

CO: What do you want campers to take away from this experience?

EM: The class is a great way to learn important biological and chemical concepts in a fun and intriguing way. With all of the television shows about crime scene investigation, the students have a genuine interest in the subject matter and find out how real investigations compare with those on television.

The students gain a true appreciation for the time and detail involved in real criminal investigations and learn key science information at the same time. Students can take what they have learned in the class, share their knowledge with others and apply the scientific principles in future science classes.

Forensics CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Techniques will be offered on July 21-25 (12:30PM-3PM). Register for this camp, along with the many other Odyssey Academy Camps, today at http://www.campodyssey.org/.

THANK YOU: Camp Odyssey @ Barnes & Noble Raises Scholarship Funds

Shoppers at Barnes & Noble got a taste of Camp Odyssey on March 21 & 22 as we raised money for and awareness of the Camp Odyssey Scholarship Fund, which sends dozens of deserving children to CO each summer when they would not be able to attend otherwise.

There were games, singing-a-longs, Wacky Science, arts & crafts, and other camp favorites hosted by CO staff. Many shoppers and friends of Camp Odyssey used the CO Book Fair vouchers, helping to raise money toward CO scholarships. WMDT-TV aired a segment about the event on Friday, adding exposure for the Fund.

Special thanks to Hannah Miller and Barnes & Noble Salisbury, and to “Sloppy Joe” Hastings for rocking the event with his sing-a-long on Saturday afternoon, where kids wrote topics on index cards and Joe made up silly, zany, clever songs using the ideas.
