Camp Odyssey Week 8

Camp Odyssey Parents,

We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for the incredible summer of fun and zaniness. The first six weeks have been amazing! We work everyday to achieve our mission; to provide the highest quality experiences, in an extraordinary environment, that make a difference in children's lives, creating memories that last a lifetime.

But it’s not over yet!

We want to encourage you, if you have not done so already, to sign up for Week 8 of Camp Odyssey’s Legendary Summer Day Camp! Week 8 is the culmination of Camp Odyssey’s historic 20th summer and you don’t want to miss it! Sign up today and be a part of the memories that last a lifetime!

Here’s a small preview of the biggest events of the week:

  • Wednesday is the ALL CAMP SHOW! We have a children’s story theme this year so please come and flip though the pages of our Camp Odyssey Storybook, with the campers acting out scenes, performing dances, signing songs, and putting on an amazing show! There will be dance, drama, laughs, and tons of fun!
  • Thursday is Caribbean Beach ‘N Pool! This is an exciting trip day, where campers will go all over Delmarva to its pools, waterparks, and beaches to relax and have fun outside in the water!
  • Friday is Bon Voyage! It’s the last chance to celebrate the summer camp and that’s just what we set out to do. Everything this day is scheduled to celebrate the best activities, games, and experiences of the summer! It’s the last chance to make memories that last a lifetime for this summer. NOTE: Camp closes at noon sharp so please pick your child up at that time. There is no after camp this day.

We at Camp Odyssey thank you so much for your support. We hope that you will join us for our final week so that we truly celebrate it all together!

Thanks,

News and Reminders for Week 6

The past 5 weeks have been a blast and Camp is ready for another action packed week!! The rest of the week will be special activity schedules and will feature some of the most camper interactive theme days yet! A big warm thank you to all of the parents who continue to support Camp Odyssey’s mission through donation of materials and continuing to bring your children here. Please read the following for special information that will be helpful throughout the week.

  • Tuesday is Scavenger Hunt day. Aptly named, campers will gather in to small groups of friends and will compete in a campus wide scavenger hunt.
  • Wednesday is PAINT POWER. This is another day that allows an opportunity for campers to get a little messy. Please have your child wear older clothes if they wish to participate in the messy stations.
  • Thursday is Girls vs. Boys day. This day could settle the age old riddle of who is better. Do girls rule and boys drool? We’ll find out Thursday! Campers will have the opportunity to participate in small group challenges to defend or challenge their title as “the best”.
  • Friday is a chance for counselors to entertain the campers for a while. Camp Odyssey’s got talent will showcase the many skills of the staff through song, dance or other acts. A special appearance by Queen Nerd too!

Reminders:

  • Please pack a snack for your child to eat during group time since we burn a lot of calories during the day. We encourage you to send water/drinks with your child to keep them hydrated throughout the day. We have water fountains throughout the camp building for them to use. With great prices for everyday snacks and drinks, the Camp Store is open at lunch and for After-Camp, so be sure to send a few dollars.
  • The Pennies from Heaven project to help Jamey “Queen Nerd” Landon with her ongoing medical expenses will continue through this week. Please bring in pennies or other donations to help a beloved Camp Odyssey legend.
  • For Make Our Community Better day next week, camp will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Food Bank. Collection boxes will be placed outside at drop off and dismissal.
  • Camp Overnight for 1, 2, Red and Blue Fish this week; sign your child up and enjoy the fun, a separate letter will be sent home explaining the schedule.
  • Saturday, August 8th is the day for Camp Odyssey’s silent auction at Jolly Rogers. Tickets can be purchased through Donna at the front office and include all day water park, Mini golf, and rides.

THE MADNESS AFTER THE MADNESS

Mud Madness Post Game: After the festivities end for the WEEK 5 Campers, Mud Madness will still continue for ANY CAMP ODYSSEY FAMILY (campers from Week 5, campers from other weeks, and parents and siblings of both)! All are welcome! After 2:45, with just a $5 donation per person, you can jump in the mud and learn what everyone is talking about! All proceeds go to the Camp Odyssey Scholarship Fund. Then you too can earn the right to wear a 2009 “I Survived Mud Madness” t-shirt. The shirts will be available to purchase that day for $12, with proceeds from that also going to the Scholarship Fund. If you want to have a great time and help support the Camp Scholarship Fund, this a fantastic opportunity to do both!

MUD MADNESS REMINDER!

Attention all parents!

This Friday, July 17th 2009 from 1:00pm – 5:30pm Camp Odyssey will host its annual
MUD MADNESS DAY. Camp will offer a giant mud pit for campers to play in; there will be a separate, shallower pit for Setting Sail and One Fish campers only. If your child does not wish to get muddy, we will have water games for them to play in and dry activities too.

If you child DOES wish to frolic in the mud, then there are a few things you should know before sending your child to camp Friday.

1) Have your child wear old (maybe even disposable) clothes for them to play in. Personally, I find that a non-cotton pair of board shorts, ones without pockets work very well in the mud pit and are easier to clean (I would not recommend a white or light colored pair though). I would not recommend wearing shoes into the mud pit; however a pair of water shoes may be okay. Socks always get lost, so not wearing them in the afternoon is a good idea.

2) Since you will be picking up your child from camp, I would recommend lining the seats of your car with old towels or trash bags. Bringing a plastic trash bag to put their muddy clothes in if they change their clothes at camp might also be a good idea.

3) We will provide rinse off stations for the campers, however it is recommended that your child bring in gallon jugs (with their name on it) already filled with water; these jugs will warm up after sitting in the sun all day. The largest complaint of Mud Madness is that the water running off of the hose is too cold (which it certainly is).

Checklist:
· Have your child wear old clothes to Mud Madness (the mud WILL stain clothes)
· Line your car seats with old towels or plastic trash bags to pick them up
· Bring gallon jugs with your child’s name on them to be filled with water
· If your child is in After camp Tennis, Swimming or Outdoor Adventure, they must change clothes

The circle will be closed off Friday afternoon, pickup will be from the sidewalk near the Lower School Gym, please park in the parking lot and walk to pick up and sign your child out.

If you are free, come and visit yourself! Parents are always welcome to visit and witness the fun of Mud Madness.

Camp will start a week long fundraiser for Jamey “Queen Nerd” Landon to help her with her ever-present medical bills. It is called “Pennies from Heaven”; bring in your pennies to fill up the jars, Bank of Delmarva will count the pennies for us after the fundraiser.

Your continuing kindness is always noticed! Thank you for your support in making this camp such a unique place for children to be themselves and grow!

WEEK FIVE REMINDERS FOR ALL PARENTS

Can you believe that it is week 5 already? This summer seems to be flying right by! Camp Odyssey is having a blast and we are looking forward to a great week. If your child likes to get messy, then this is THE week for just that. Please read the following information about this coming week.

Tuesday is Vegetable Messtival where campers can play in pools of cucumbers, launch carrots and very sincerely make a mess with vegetables.

Wednesday is Around the World in 80 minutes, this is a theme day; campers are encouraged to dress up in international dress as we will have a show at opening this day.

Thursday is Up, Up and Away day! Today, we celebrate anything and everything that is related to flight and floatation.

Friday is the epitome of Camp Odyssey; MUD MADNESS. Please pay attention to handouts given to your children and check back on the website SOON to see exact details and procedure and how you, the parents (!), can get a chance to get in the mud!

  • Please pack a snack for your child to eat during group time since we burn a lot of calories during the day. We encourage you to send water/drinks with your child to keep them hydrated throughout the day. We have water fountains throughout the camp building for them to use as well.
  • When considering what to do about your child’s snack, don’t forget about Z-Snack Shack! With great prices for everyday snacks and drinks, the Camp Store is open at lunch and for After-Camp, so be sure to send a few dollars.
  • Specialty Camps: We still have openings at many of our Camp Odyssey Specialty Camps! Don’t miss your chance to get incredible experiences in music, sailing, art, and more! Check our Camp Catalog or look online for more details!

Help Queen Nerd with Your Pennies!

During the week of July 20-24, campers, their families, and members of the community are encouraged to bring their loose pennies (just pennies please), to Camp Odyssey as the camp seeks to help one of its own: Jamey "Queen Nerd" Landon, who courageously battles Lupus and other medical maladies, along with the major medical bills her medical conditions continuously create. The pennies will be counted by Bank of Delmarva and a check will be presented to Jamey by the campers during the week of July 27.
